Glen's Story: A New Normal 

In 2020, a highway accident left long-haul truck driver Glen Bennett with life-changing injuries, including the loss of both legs. Airlifted to Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital, Glen was cared for by a multidisciplinary team of trauma, burns and intensive care specialists who saw him through 19 operations and months of recovery. 

"The RBWH was great. I was actually born in this hospital, and thankfully, I didn't die in this hospital." 

Getting His Life Back 

Five years on, Glen is walking on prosthetic legs, back behind the wheel of the family car, and building a life with his wife Roni and son Hugo. He still visits RBWH regularly for physiotherapy with a team he now calls friends. 

"Not only did I learn to walk, but I've since passed my driver's competency so I can legally drive with my prosthetic legs. Who knew that was a thing! And I'm doing it!" 

Next on his list: getting his manual licence back, taking Hugo on outdoor adventures, and simply enjoying everyday life with his family. 

"Every day is hard work, every day I have struggles — I just have less of them, and they're not as bad as they used to be." 

Why Glen Gives Back 

Today, Glen is RBWH Foundation's #1 Patient Ambassador. He gives his time to share his story and support the research that helped save his life, because he's seen firsthand what it makes possible for patients like him. 

"I'm happy to help raise money for the Foundation, because I know the money goes into research — and that covers so many areas of medicine, whether it's brain surgery, cardiac care or skin culture. I don't have any issues going back to the hospital, because I know I would be dead without them." 

His hope is that future patients will have access to faster, gentler treatments — so the road to recovery is a little easier for the next person who needs it.
