Records smashed as Brisbane runs for the blokes we love

Powered by passion and commitment to the cause, a crowd of 8,000 has walked and run in the inaugural RBWH Foundation Blue Run 5km, raising awareness of men’s health and the importance of regular and early checks for prostate cancer.

Thanks to a staggering 342 fundraisers, who raised $36,468 for medical and health innovation,2026 was the Foundation’s most successful Transurban Bridge to Brisbane campaign ever.

Just as impressive were the people and stories behind them.

Logan father-of-six Trevor Witika stole hearts before he’d even crossed the finish line, having been crowned Bridge to Brisbane’s fundraising champion with an incredible total of $19,254. He and his team of 25 family and friends, ‘Hīkoi with Trev’, came home third on the Teams fundraising leaderboard with $25,656.

For Trevor, participating in the Blue Run 5km was personal after being diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer last year. Wife Amanda had insisted he have a swollen knee checked by his doctor – and have a prostate cancer test at the same time.

“The doctor wasn’t too concerned but referred me to a specialist to make sure,” said Trevor, “From there, it was pretty quick.

“They said we need to get you into surgery and get this out of you. I had robotic surgery, which was a non-nerve sparing surgery so you can suffer incontinence. That took me about three months to get over, but I got there. I didn’t think I ever would, but I got there!”

The self-employed concreter is now committed to promoting the importance of regular check-ups to workmates, family and friends either in person or through his social media and by participating in the inaugural Blue Run 5km
“On my page, I’ve had a few guys tell meThanks for sharing that, I'm now going to get checked’ and it's brought tears to my eyes. That's exactly what I was trying to do - get people checked by their GPs.”
