Frequently Asked Questions
About the RBWH Foundation
What is the RBWH Foundation?
The RBWH Foundation is the official charity partner of Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH) and its broader healthcare community. We work with donors, fundraisers, corporate partners and supporters to fund frontline innovation – backing researchers and hospital teams to advance care and accelerate medical discovery for patients and the people who love them, across Queensland and beyond.
Why support the RBWH Foundation?
Your support helps bridge the gap between the bedside and the lab – providing researchers and frontline teams with the resources they need to rethink care, test new ideas and turn promising innovations into real-world outcomes. Your support is helping build the expert and deeply human health care of the future.
Where do the funds that are raised or donated go?
Your donation helps advance patient care and life-saving medical research. It buys time for researchers to develop breakthrough treatments. Time for doctors to consider new diagnoses and provide the best possible care for their patients. And time for families to continue to enjoy every precious moment with the people they love, hopeful about what the future holds. You help the RBWH Foundation achieve so much.
Read more in this year’s Donor Impact Report.
Doesn't the government fund medical research and patient care?
Government grant funding is limited. In 2025, just 12% of applicants were awarded competitive funding from the Australian Government's main body for health and medical research, the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC).
By funding the initial small-scale trials that help researchers prove that their ideas work, we can help them gather the data they need to qualify for those larger government grants.
And, when frontline teams see an opportunity to directly improve care, we provide the funding to turn their ideas into reality. From pilot initiatives and wellbeing programs to new models of care, we support the innovations that help take healthcare beyond what standard hospital budgets can achieve.
Does the RBWH Foundation only support the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH)?
The RBWH Foundation supports the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital (RBWH), the Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) and other prestigious research Institutes and Centres located at the Herston Health Precinct, including the Jamieson Trauma Institute (JTI), Herston Biofabrication Institute (HBI) and Herston Infectious Diseases Institute (HeIDI).
Together, we’re working to advance healthcare at every stage – from preventing illness and injury to enabling better, faster diagnosis, more effective treatment and truly holistic care.
How does the RBWH Foundation determine where support is needed most?
We work closely with clinicians, researchers, healthcare leaders and stakeholders to identify areas of greatest need and opportunity. Funding decisions are guided by potential impact, strategic hospital priorities and community benefit.
Who can apply for RBWH Foundation funding?
The lead applicant must hold an appointment with RBWH, STARS, or the Office of the Chief Executive (including Metro North Health Institutes located on the Herston Health Precinct). The proposed Research project or Patient Care initiative must primarily be based and benefit patients treated through the Herston Health Precinct.

Is my donation tax-deductible?
Yes. Donations of $2 or more are generally tax-deductible in Australia. To claim a deduction, you must have a record of your donation.
Will I get a receipt?
Yes. A receipt will be issued and can, where applicable, be used for taxation purposes.
Can I direct my gift to a specific purpose?
We appreciate that motivations for donating are often deeply personal: the desire to ‘thank’ hospital teams, support progress in a particular area, or improve a specific experience for the wider community. However, restricting how and where we spend your donation, also restricts our ability to maximise your impact.
The most powerful gift you can give is your trust. When you make an ‘unrestricted’ or ‘untied’ donation, you give us the flexibility to respond quickly to emerging needs, focus on the greatest impact, and invest in the ideas taking shape on the frontline of care.
If you’d like to discuss making a gift, including to a specific project or area of care, please contact us on 1300 363 786.
When I give to a specific project, how much goes to the project?
When you give to a specific project or area of care, 80% of your donation goes directly to research, innovation, equipment or patient care programs in the area you choose to support. The remaining 20% is invested in the RBWH Foundation’s people, systems and governance – the ‘indirect costs’ that ensure our work is not only impactful but ethical, transparent and sustainable, benefiting patients and the wider community now and into the future.
How will my donation be spent?
We are committed to ensuring every donation is used responsibly and for maximum impact. Funding decisions are guided by rigorous assessment processes and informed by clinicians, researchers and frontline healthcare teams to ensure the projects we support are meaningful, evidence-based and capable of improving outcomes for patients and families.
We carefully monitor the progress and impact of funded initiatives and maintain strong governance and financial oversight. We also invest in the people, systems and capabilities needed to operate effectively and sustainably, ensuring we can continue to support life-changing healthcare initiatives for years to come.

Impact
What difference does my support make?
Every donation helps improve healthcare outcomes. Your support can fund research breakthroughs, cutting-edge therapy approaches, specialist equipment, and the compassionate care that makes a real difference to patients and families.
Who benefits from donations?
As one of Australia's largest and most advanced hospitals, RBWH provides highly specialised care to more than 600,000 patients each year, including many people from regional and remote Queensland, northern New South Wales, Northern Territory and part of the Pacific Rim, who are referred for treatment that cannot be provided closer to home. RBWH also plays a critical role in statewide healthcare, delivering specialist services, leading clinical research and supporting emergency responses across Queensland and beyond.
Through the projects, research and innovations funded by the RBWH Foundation, patients benefit from earlier diagnoses, better treatments, improved models of care and access to world-class expertise.
Whether it's someone receiving life-saving treatment in Brisbane, a regional patient benefiting from a new model of care first piloted at RBWH, or communities supported through statewide research and prevention initiatives, the impact of donor support extends well beyond the hospital's walls.
