Peddling philanthropist wins major Queensland honour

06 Jun 2025

The RBWH Foundation is thrilled to share that Associate Professor Joel Dulhunty has been named Emerging Philanthropist of the Year at the Queensland Gives Philanthropy Awards!

This honour recognises an innovative and inspiring philanthropist whose early achievements reflect the very best of generosity, creativity and impact—and Joel exemplifies all of that and more.

As the driving force behind Raise it for Redcliffe, an initiative of the RBWH Foundation, Joel has helped raise over $1 million in just four years for Redcliffe Hospital. These funds have supported more than 60 projects that have improved patient care, staff wellbeing and vital research—everything from modernising critical hospital units to creating research opportunities for frontline clinicians.

From cycling 2,600km from Cairns to Brisbane to completing a 500km penny farthing challenge (yes, really!) - his imaginative fundraising and deep community connection are exactly the kind of creative philanthropy this award celebrates.

Far from resting on his laurels, the Director of Research and Implementation - at both Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) and Redcliffe Hospital - will now ride from RBWH to Redcliffe Hospital on Giving Day, Wednesday 11 June. Watch Seven Sunrise, Australia's #1 breakfast program, as Joel is farewelled on this latest fundraising feat.

Joel doesn’t just fundraise, he volunteers, advocates, educates and most importantly, inspires. Joel is living proof that philanthropy isn’t just about giving money—it’s about leading with heart, lifting others and building a community of care.

A huge congratulations to Joel—and to all the incredible finalists—each one a champion for Queensland and a powerful reminder of the impact of giving.
