A Gift of Love that helps others

07 Feb 2024

"Mum helped fundraise...she was so loved, and we got to turn that love into a little bit of financial help for others."

Renata Halpin
Margaret's daughter

Renata Halpin is an RBWH Foundation community fundraiser, who recently raised more than $1,800 for the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) Foundation, in honour of her late mother Margaret Schofield (pictured with niece Siahn).

Margaret, an ex-nurse and previous patient of RBWH, tragically lost a baby in 1966 and found comfort in the kindness she received from the RBWH Neonatal Unit.

Renata recounts, "Mum felt at the time they were the only ones there for her in 1966 when things were not talked about like they are now, and she was eternally grateful."

Later, Margaret witnessed again, the excellent care provided to her premature grandchildren in the same unit.

Remembering the connection she had with the hospital and staff in the RBWH Neonatal Unit drove Margaret to make her final wish - for her friends and family to make donations to the RBWH Foundation on her passing, in lieu of flowers.

The outpouring of support this request received has been a testament to Margaret's generous spirit and a powerful way to honour her memory, even during a time of grief for her loved ones.

Thank you, Renata, for sharing your mum's story with us and fundraising with the RBWH Foundation.
