What is Blue September?
Blue September is a movement that brings people together to champion men's health, fund vital research and patient care initiatives, support those impacted by health challenges, and inspire positive action.
Throughout the month, we encourage Australians to start conversations, prioritise their wellbeing, check in on their mates, and support a cause that affects families, workplaces and communities.

Blue Run 5km
Bridge to Brisbane
Join Team RBWH Foundation in the Blue Run 5km on Sunday 13 September and raise a sweat for the blokes you love while supporting an important cause.
Just a bit further
From Adelaide to Toowoomba and on to Brisbane, the bloke from Gundy (Dave Batterham) will run, ride, and wheel a wheelbarrow across hundreds of kilometres - pushing himself physically and emotionally to raise funds for the RBWH Foundation.
Spotlight Story: Prostate Cancer Awareness
Early detection is the best protection for prostate cancer
Logan father-of-six, Trevor Witika, never made time for regular check-ups at the GP, until he almost ran out of time as a result. In 2025, wife Amanda insisted he have a swollen knee checked by his doctor – and have a prostate cancer test at the same time.
“I had some of symptoms of possible prostate cancer. The doctor wasn’t too concerned but referred me to a specialist to make sure,” said Trevor.
The results were shocking. Trevor had a stage 3 prostate cancer, considered ‘locally advanced’ as it hadn’t spread to other organs. His lesion was 33 millimetres by 27 millimetres and the cancer soon progressed to stage 4.
“From there, it was pretty quick. They said we need to get you into surgery and get this out of you. I had robotic surgery which was a non-nerve sparing surgery so you suffer incontinence. That took me about 3 months to get over but I got there. I didn’t think I ever would, but I got there!
The self-employed concreter is now committed to promoting the importance of regular check-ups to workmates, family and friends - in person, through his social media and by participating in the inaugural RBWH Foundation 5km Blue Run, part of the 2026 Transurban Bridge to Brisbane.
“My wife brought the Blue Run to my attention. I thought that's great, let's do it. On my page, I’ve had a few guys tell me ‘thanks for sharing that, I'm now going to get checked’ and it's brought tears to my eyes and that's exactly what I was trying to do - get people to go get checked by their GPs.”
Spotlight Story: Men's Health
Adam's story is a powerful reminder of the importance of men's health, resilience and taking charge of your wellbeing.
Despite living with renal failure and requiring dialysis every second day, the RBWH patient refused to let his condition define him. Over three years, Adam worked closely with Metro North specialist teams to safely prepare for a marathon, undergoing extensive testing and following strict nutrition and hydration plans.
Supported by his family, friends and healthcare team, Adam became Australia's first dialysis patient to complete a marathon, running 42km in just over five hours. His message is one that resonates with Blue September: prioritise your health, seek support when you need it, and don't let life's challenges stop you from achieving your goals.
"I wanted to show my kids that even if you're dealt a few rough cards in life, it's still up to you what you make of it. You get a choice, and you can choose to give up or not."
Spotlight Story: Prostate Cancer Research
This Blue September, we're raising awareness to support prostate cancer research that is changing the future of diagnosis, treatment and survivorship. These discoveries can lead to earlier detection, better treatments and improved outcomes for men and their families.
One researcher helping lead that change is Dr Kevin Koo, a Blue Run participant and clinician-researcher whose RBWH Foundation-funded project aims to develop a home urine test for prostate cancer, similar to a pregnancy test. The innovative device can be operated wirelessly by a generic smartphone, delivering results within hours, compared to the weeks currently required for many test results. While the technology has already demonstrated success in a multi-year clinical study, further research is needed before it can become commercially available.
By supporting Blue September, you're helping researchers like Dr Koo turn promising ideas into life-changing innovations for patients and families affected by prostate cancer.
