LiverMAP-Q: Mapping and allocation planning for hospitalised cirrhosis patients in Queensland

RBWH Foundation Grants Round 5

Project description

This project will look at new ways to improve liver care for people hospitalised with cirrhosis across Queensland.

The team will use state-wide data to learn where resources are needed most and what factors lead to higher use of hospital transfers.

Why this work is needed

In Queensland, hospital admissions for liver cirrhosis have risen sharply with approximately 7,000 hospitalisations annually.

Liver cirrhosis is the term used to indicate that healthy liver cells have been replaced with permanent scarred tissue, impacting liver function.

Patients with cirrhosis are often readmitted to hospital multiple times and may travel long distances to metropolitan hospitals, such as RBWH, for specialist care.

Expected outcomes

A representative panel of patients, caregivers and healthcare professional will help guide the project. By combining these perspectives, we hope to identify where and what kinds of hospital resources are most needed to improve hospital-based liver care closer to home.
