A new evidence-based service model for people with Parkinson’s disease

RBWH Foundation Grants Round 5

Project description

This project funds a dedicated neuropsychologist to perform cognitive assessments for people with Parkinson’s disease. This will allow referrals from neurology to neuropsychology to support the demand for these assessments.

Why this work is needed

Cognitive problems are very common in people living with Parkinson’s disease, yet these problems may be overlooked or only assessed in people undergoing surgery, due to a lack of neuropsychology resources. This leaves many people with Parkinson’s disease without access to timely diagnosis, treatment and care for their cognitive symptoms.

Expected outcomes

This project will evaluate the feasibility of an integrated service model for people with Parkinson’s disease visiting the RBWH Neurology Outpatient Clinic. The goal is to improve the quality of cognitive care, the patient's quality of life and reduce stress on families by embedding a neuropsychology service into standard care.
