Project description

This project will establish a co-designed, culturally safe end-of-life environment and experience in ICU. The team will focus on support of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander patients and families, while offering benefits that are transferable to all patients and cultures.

Why this work is needed

ICU can be a daunting and overwhelming experience for any family. This feeling of disconnection and isolation can be amplified for families who have to travel long distances to Brisbane, separated from extended family and community.

The project team has sought advice from the RBWH Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Unit and will co-design end-of-life support with Turrbal Traditional Custodians, Elders, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Liaison Officers and representatives of patients' families.

Expected outcomes

This project will provide families with resources to create end-of-life memories in a culturally safe environment. Ideas include blankets with indigenous colours and artworks, and patient handprints presented in custom made envelopes. Environmental changes include introduction of calming soundscapes, the use of essential bush oils and design and painting of a mural that reflects Turrbal Country. These elements would create a sense of connection to community and country, in the clinical medical environment of ICU.
