Band-aids, blisters for a cure

"Only a little bit further."

It's something my wife, Judi, said to me on my first bike ride, on my first day away from home.

It was a tough day, and those words kept me moving.

I never imagined they'd stay with me for the rest of my life.

These days, they're the words that carry me forward when the road gets long.

Over the past few weeks, I've cycled from Adelaide to Toowoomba and pushed a wheelbarrow towards Brisbane in memory of Judi.

This journey started because of her, but it's also for the countless Queenslanders who find themselves travelling long distances to access the specialist care they need.

Living in Goondiwindi, we knew that reality well.

When Judi became unwell, RBWH became a big part of our lives. It was where she faced some of her greatest challenges with courage, strength and grace. It's also where we experienced firsthand the compassion and dedication of healthcare workers caring for patients from right across Queensland, from Brisbane to the bush.

The truth is, all I have left are memories of Judi.

But those memories have carried me through every kilometre of this challenge.

Every conversation, every donation and every step forward has been for her.

And every kilometre has also been for the Queenslanders and families who, like us, rely on hospitals such as RBWH when they need them most.

When the road gets tough, I can still hear Judi's voice:

"Only a little bit further."
