2022 Anglo American Burns, Skin, and Wound Care Grant
Share this project

Project description

The Queensland Skin Bank and the Queensland Skin Culture Centre (QSCC) opened in 2018. They specialised in allograft and cultured skin.

Allograft is a medical procedure where tissues or organs are taken from one person (the donor) and transplanted into another person (the recipient).

Cultured skin refers to skin that is grown in a laboratory rather than being taken from a person.

Both allografts and cultured skin help to treat burn victims, patients with chronic and hard-to-heal wounds, or other skin injuries. Patients under these circumstances now benefit from having a local supply of allograft and cultured skin in Brisbane, and the clinical service provided by QSCC is constantly improving.

Why this work is needed

Allograft and cultured skin are significant advancements in medical technology and have been a lifesaver for many people with severe burns or wounds. By using these tools, doctors and technicians can create or transplant enough tissue to cover large areas of damage.

This project focused on upgrading items and equipment at QSCC to continuously provide the best practice for allograft and cultures skin through their Quality Management System.

Outcomes

Every patient affected by burns, difficult-to-heal wounds and other skin issues requiring skin to be grown or transplanted benefits from the upgrade to QSCC. The upgraded items will provide a much-needed clinical service, a great example of bench to bedside. As the number of different clinical services QSCC provides expands, so will the Quality Management System. QSCC is always striving to improve their Quality Systems.
