Project description

An investigation of the safety and accuracy of conducting neurological examinations through telehealth for people experiencing low back pain (LBP).

Why this work is needed

This study addressed concerns about the reliability of telehealth assessments for LBP raised when they were introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic. The validity of neurological examinations performed remotely (telehealth) were compared to in-person evaluations. With LBP affecting a significant portion of the Australian population, this research was crucial in guiding healthcare decisions, especially during times of restricted in-person interactions.

Expected outcomes

Despite challenges posed by COVID-19 disruptions, the study has gathered data from 33 participants, highlighting varying levels of accuracy in testing, between telehealth and in-person assessments.

Preliminary findings indicated high accuracy for certain tests (e.g. sensation and functional tasks), while further analysis is needed for reflex tests.

This pioneering study provides essential insights into the appropriateness of telehealth neurological assessments, potentially influencing clinical practices and supporting future trials in managing LBP through telehealth.
