Ben was also my inspiration to get back on a bike

Sunday 14th Apr
I used to ride my bike as a kid a lot growing up in a small town, to and from school, to Paula's place, to sports training, everywhere, but hadn't really ridden a bike since I was 17 until I met Ben.
When we first met he was doing Olympic Distance triathlon.  He inspired me, but I said I would "never do triathlon" but maybe do some riding events!  I eventually asked him to help me buy my first bike as an 'adult' (I was in my 40s!)

I didn't want to spend a lot of money in case I didn't like it or spend much time on it, so we bought 'Tanky" a 'T bar' bike as I wasn't confident with a road bike or 'clip on' (cleat) shoes!  Tanky was named by Ben as he was quite heavy and sluggish to ride.

Tanky did have straps on his pedals which I (stupidly) felt more comfortable with, although I did stack it when I couldn't get my foot out in time on one of my first ever group rides going around a corner and into a down hill I wasn't familiar with.  I think I was training for one of my first rides, the Brissy to the Bay 50km.  I have been a bit scared of riding on the roads with cars and hearing about how my cyclists are hit by cars still continues to make me mad, incredibly sad and scare me.

When my Mum suddenly passed away at age 65 on Mother's day 2012, I was devastated and in shock. It was my first funeral :(  I found out that the Gold Coast 100's main fundraising recipient was the Heart Foundation (and there were more road closures).
I wanted to do it but had zero confidence I could ride that far, 100kms!   For those who may not know, I suffer from a mild form of chronic fatigue so training does take its toll on me, but I am fortunate to still be able to train and enter some events, but never thought I could ride 100kms.
Through the love, support, coaching and faith Ben had in me, I did train and do that ride in 2013 and was one of the top fundraisers for the Heart Foundation (thanks to all of my amazing supportive friends and family!).
The fuel for raising funds and awareness of heart disease, as well as the faith in me and encouragement Ben gave me drove me to go further than I ever thought I could ride.  Ben even rode with me the whole way, which I know was not easy for him on his much lighter road bike to go behind Tanky and I, so slow on the hills (of which there were many but according to Ben it was a pretty 'flat' route!).  We were married almost a year at this point and I could never have been more sure that I married the right man. I had wonderful friends too who had faith in me as well and encouraged me all the way and surprised me at the finish line at the Gold Coast, it was an amazing feeling!
I'm glad to say I finally agreed to Ben's consistent but not naggy suggestions (haha) to get a road bike, and he found me a fabulous second hand Giant Liv, (with cleats and I was terrified!!) who I fondly called Lillian, who I still have.
On Lillian I came first in my age group in the  2021 Tour de Brisbane 30km ('piccolo fondo'); also with the support, coaching and encouragement of Ben.  It then changed to a 50km tougher, hillier ride for me (382m climbing). I missed 2022 (I can't remember why) but did 2023 and I came into that with less training but still managed 6th in my age group, thanks again to the support, coaching and encouragement on my husband.

We were both training for this years' Tour de Brisbane when our worlds were turned upside down, but we hope to be back in 2025 :)

ps for those wondering if there's a theme here, yes... Ben did the unthinkable and encouraged mw to try triathlon... which I always said 'no way' to haha, and eventually I said yes; but that's another story

My husband is my inspiration for running

Monday 1st Apr
My husband, best friend and partner in life has faced and overcome many things, but recently faced his biggest challenge yet, a very scary cancer diagnosis, admittance to the RBWH Emergency department and a very lengthy and complex surgery to remove a decent size malignant tumour behind his eye in his sinus that was on the other side also pushing against his brain which resulted in damage to his brain membrane that needed to be repaired (with grafting).  This all happened in the past 4 weeks and thankfully to the Skull Base Patient Experience unit under Dr Ryan Sommerville he is now in the RBWH in recovery.  Its been 5 days since his surgery and so far the signs are positive.  Pathology results are due back in a week or so more to see if they were successful in removing all of the tumour that had weaved its way around the eye, pushing it forward and down, and the front of the brain and even eroded some bone in his eyebrow area.  Luckily he was able to keep his eye, yet he lost his sense of smell, a very small price to pay considering.  He is going amazing and I couldn't be prouder. He is on his own up and down journey of course (that I won't speak to) but I can see tiny improvements each day since his surgery, and this is giving me a lot of comfort and hope.

My husband first inspired me to run the most I'd ever run and to do my first ever 5km Park Run 11 years ago.  He is a triathlete and has completed several Iron Man distance events #proudwifey

I haven't been running much before his diagnosis as I'd rolled my ankle on my last Park run early February.  Then I felt guilty as Ben couldn't run.  He was actually running right up until the day of his first CT scan although he wasn't quite feeling right.
I started thinking I could start running and cycling again when he was better.  But I have a strong family history of heart disease and I need to keep moving, I know Ben would want me to, so I had all of these different emotions but this event popped up in my inbox and I felt this is what I needed.

It also came at a time when I was trying to think how I could say thanks to the RBWH staff, especially the ENT surgeons and nurses who have been caring for Ben so very well and I believe have saved his life.  And so here I am, I've not heard of this event before last night when I saw the email and started my journey this morning with my first 5km run since early Feb, not very fast but I finished.

I am looking to run 50km and cycle 50km over April.  This to some may be a lot and to others not very much, but for me this will be a challenge, but I know I need to be looking after myself more than ever now and this challenge will help me with that, both physically and mentally.

The support we have both received during this time has been absolutely incredible, from both of our families and friends, his (our) beloved triathlon club (WGTC) and his 'Phat Boys can't run hills' social running club, and our work places.  The love and support received has been so greatly appreciated.  Thank you (heart emoji!)

thanks for listening, love trudy x

(this photo is from a sprint distance triathlon we did as a team many years ago at Bribie Triathlon. Ben did the swim and bike, and I did the run, we somehow came 2nd even though I was the slow part of team Bendy :) )
