The Royal 50K

Raising funds for our Pregnancy-Associated Cancer research

This April, we're taking on The Royal 50K Challenge to raise crucial funds for the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH). I'm leading this Pregnancy-Associated Cancer research project and I have applied for the RBWH foundation grant.

Pregnancy-associated cancer (PAC) is often defined as cancers that occur during or within 1 year after pregnancy. Studies have recently suggested defining PAC to up to 10 years post-pregnancy based on longer-than-expected effects of pregnancy on cancer risks. Moreover, some have observed an increased rate of PAC over time, possibly associated with aging and pregnancy-related body changes. As PAC often results in poor outcomes in both mothers and babies, there is an urgent need for high-quality studies investigating the trends and traits of PAC. We will analyse data from all Queensland women who gave birth during 1998-2023. The study will calculate the age-standardised incidence rate (ASIR) of PAC each year, compare the traits and outcomes of women with and without PAC, and analyse their survival rates. This knowledge may guide the adjustment of current health policy and improve the prevention and management of PAC, ultimately contributing to improved patients’ well-being.
