World-leaders in medical research

Your donation provides time for life-saving medical discoveries

Across every department at Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital (RBWH) and the Herston Health Precinct’s Surgical, Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS) and its many research Institutes and Centres, great minds are working to save and improve lives through clinical medicine, science and health services research.

RBWH:

Publishes close to

1,500

research articles every year

Is the site lead for

225

clinical trials annually

Employs over

500

clinician researchers

Research delivers ground-breaking new treatments and prevention methods and shows us how to implement them for the greatest benefit to save more lives.

– Professor Dan Chambers

Executive Director Research, Metro North Health

RBWH is one of the largest research hospitals in the Southern Hemisphere

It offers advanced tertiary and quaternary levels of medical care which are highly specialised and not widely accessed.

What makes RBWH even more extraordinary is its strong links within the Herston Health Precinct to more than 30 health facilities; numerous medical research Centres and Institutes, and other health organisations.

Changing world practice to save lives globally.

RBWH and Herston Health Campus researchers have changed world practice in areas of burns and trauma, infectious diseases, neurology, maternal foetal medicine, advanced medical imaging, premature babies, cancer care, degenerative diseases and many other health areas. This proud culture of research dates back more than 160 years.

So much more is yet to be achieved as illnesses and disorders continue to debilitate and take lives.

The Gift of Time for a loving mother

Mother of two Sheridan Donohue has just one wish: to be given the gift of time through life-saving brain cancer research.

"Honestly, that's the best gift you can give anyone, to raise money for research to extend people's life and cure illnesses because money doesn't mean anything in the long run," said Sheridan, "You need health."

In November 2020, Sheridan suffered a seizure while on holiday at Moreton Island. Paramedics initially thought she was dehydrated, but a scan later revealed she had a brain tumour.

Because of RBWH’s participation in cutting edge cancer research, Sheridan was offered a place on a clinical trial.

"I was ecstatic to be put on a trial. As well as it potentially saving my life, I also want to help others in the future."

It's now two years since Sheridan was first diagnosed and every month is a Gift of Time with those she loves.

There is no greater generosity than that which saves a life. Give the Gift of Time by donating today to support life-saving research with local, national and global impact.

Extraordinary opportunities through the vast Herston Health Precinct research network

Your donation will support an engine room of world-class medical professionals and clinicians.

RBWH lies in the heart of Herston Health Precinct, a global leader in health, innovation, education, research, training and clinical care.

The Herston Health Precinct is a collaborative community home to more than 30 health facilities, medical research institutes, universities, and organisations.

More than 13,000 clinical and non-clinical staff, scientists, researchers and students, bring powerful research capabilities to the emerging challenges of future health including an ageing population, cancer and chronic disease, cardiovascular and respiratory disease and kidney health.

Why our medical researchers need your help

Despite our reliance on Australia’s brightest medicals minds to improve health globally, few people realise that sourcing research funding is an ongoing issue.

A 2022 report from Research Australia reported that:

  • most research projects do not receive government funding which means they must source other funding from non-government organisations including not-for-profit organisations such as RBWH Foundation
  • 55% of researchers must resubmit for finance as often as every 12 months
  • many researchers and research assistants do not have long-term positions due to funding shortfalls.

A monthly gift will help support a diverse range of extraordinary research opportunities that would otherwise go unfunded

While very donation makes a difference, monthly gifts are the most powerful way to help ensure life-saving research continues. This research has potential to save lives and improve health throughout Australia and internationally, through a strong global collaboration.
