Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Peri-Arrest (RBWH Staff)


The Focused Cardiac Ultrasound Peri-Arrest (FCU Peri-Arrest) Course offers systematic diagnosis of conditions that cause peri-arrest and cardiac arrest, including ultrasound of the heart, lung and abdomen. This course provides a good knowledge-base reinforced with learning practical skills in performing and interpreting ultrasound of the heart, lung and abdomen with realistic ultrasound simulators. Prior basic training in focused cardiac ultrasound (transthoracic echocardiography) is a pre-requisite, eg FCU TTE or iHeartScan™.

Workshops are conducted in the newly developed Centre for Excellence and Innovation in Anaesthesia located within the Department of Anaesthesia at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital. This course is CME accredited with ACEM, CICM and ANZCA.



The FCU Peri-Arrest course comprises of five components:

1. E-Learning package with 20 pre-workshop case studies

2. Three-hour hands-on workshop

3. 16 self-directed post-workshop case studies on the CAE Vimedix echo simulator

4. Assessment and Completion

5. Optional logbook – 30 cases

Program cost incorporates access to all online materials, workshop, self-directed simulator case studies, and certificate on completion.
